3rd New Zealand Gypsy Jazz Workshop - Jan 24th and 25th 2009
Once again the workshop sold out very quickly proving to be a popular event for guitarists interested in this style. It was interesting to note that more than half the participants were from outside the Wellington area, so our message is starting to spread. Thanks to Greg Crayford head of music at Rongotai college for the use of the music suite for the weekend.
Wellington weather was very kind, in fact quite hot comparatively, enabling outdoor jamming during the afternoon sessions. The standard of skills has improved greatly with some very competent players demonstrating their new found technique. Traditional rest stroke technique was evident with the speed and clarity of some of the solos we were hearing. There was much talk about guitars with some very nice examples turning up with their proud owners. A vintage Favino, Duponts Md-50b and Vieille Reserve, plus a smaterring of Gitanes and a Cigano to name but a few. One or two people are planning to make their own Selmer style guitars in the near future, we are all looking forward very much to seeing the result of these projects. Thanks from our tutors Nick Granville and Leigh Jackson to all the participants for an exciting weekend. Just in a year that we have been running these events the level of playing left us in no doubt that this wonderful style is now in good hands for the future. Looking forward to the next one..... Thanks again from GJW

The jam sessions were a highlight of the weekend with everybody participating in rhythm playing and soloing fuelled by a love for the music and of course Toffee pops. Thanks to Rongotai College for letting us turn the music department into a gypsy camp for the weekend and thanks to Nick Granville and Leigh Jackson for their enthusiasm and tutoring. A page will soon be upon this site showing the photos and videos taken over the weekend, these will be available to participants only. It is looking like we will be running another workshop in January 2009 but details are yet to be decided. Registrations for this event will beopen on the 1st of October 2008. Thanks again from GJW

1st New Zealand Gypsy Jazz Workshop - January 24th-26th 2008
Thanks to all of you for your involvement in the January New Zealand Gypsy jazz workshop 2008 in Wellington. 20 guitarists getting together and learning to play Gypsy is our idea of having a good time and a great start to promoting Gypsy jazz in New Zealand. This will now be an annual event.
Thanks to the music department at Rongotai college for hosting this event and the final night concert.
Also thanks to Nick Granville and Chris Williamson for their teaching and Nils Olsen and Terry Crayford for their involvement in the final concert. This was the first event of it's kind in New Zealand and willnow be an annual fixture.
We have taken into consideration requests from members and will be making a few changes to how things run, namely,
-the workshop will be streamed so people returning will not have to cover the same material
-beginners will be catered for in a separate course.
-the workshop will run so that a minimal amount of time needs to be taken off work.
-more Toffee Pops
